This district covers an area in the historical regions of Moravia and Silesia. The countryside is characterized by hills and foothills and about half of the district is covered by forest. Two very important rivers, the Ostravice and the Olse and their tributaries, flow through the district. The dams Zermanice, Olesna and Baska are very popular as holiday resorts and water sport centres. The area of this region offers more than 210 km of marked cycle trails. Their main axis is made by the long-distance trail called "Moravská Brána". There are also beautiful ski slopes on the Beskydy Mountains, e.g. the slopes of Radhost and near the Pustevny winter centre (which has 9 ski lifts). Tourists can reach Pustevny from Ráztoky by chair lift.
