The district lies in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and contains the main part of Zdarske Hills protected landscape area. It covers an area of 1672 sq. km with an altitude varying between 600 - 836 m above sea level (the highest peak Devet Skal). Ecologically it is the cleanest countryside. The northern part of the district is covered with vast forests, primarily spruce trees. The Silver Spring located on Zak Mountain - 810 m above sea level is the source of one of the stream of Svratka River, the longest river in the district. Apart from the Sazava River, whose source is in the Velko Darko Lake, and the Oslava River, there are many other small rivers in the district. The district also includes a number of ponds - e.g. Sýkovec, Medlov, Mílovy. Nove Mesto na Morave established in the middle of 13 th century. The town is a significant cultural, tourist and ski centre of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands.
