Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. Due to its location, tradition and amenities it is an important industrial, business and social centre of the South Moravian region. Situated in the south-eastern part of the Czech Republic, at the confluence of the rivers Svratka and Svitava, the northern side of the city is surrounded by the foothills of the Drahanská Highlands and The Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and the large South Moravian Lowlands is to the south. Brno reservoir on the Svratka River is a centre of sports and recreation. Mariánské Valley, the countryside around Sobesice, Utechov and Jundrov are popular among hikers and cyclists. The city of Brno offers a wide range of services for tourists and visitors and many tourist destinations are easily accessible within and around the city. Brno´s position and developed infrastructure permit the city to be a trade-fair and congress centre. The grounds of the Brno Exhibition Centre are among the most attractive in Central Europe. All of the events take place in the unique spaces built in Funcionalistic style, first opened in 1928.
